Clean Picnics: Carrying on the No Junk challenge

Changing the way I eat has dramatically impacted my health and state of mind (as well as my waistline).  I am rarely tempted by ‘non-clean’ foods, although when I am I tend to indulge as I am a firm believer that most things are ok in moderation.

Except Wine Gums – once I have one of those addiction kicks in and I have to consume the whole bag.   This happened recently and the evening that followed was not pretty.

Of course, what happens when you feel flipping fantastic most of the time, is you feel compelled to tell other and share the secret.

I believe I can be a little annoying at times…

But I have passed the benefit of clean living to my children and it impacts how we eat together,

Before Paleo entered my life, picnics with the children would be packed full of processed treats, rich in sugar and low in nutrients.  Like many mothers before me I have fallen guilty to buying easy food, pre prepared and pre packaged, with lists of ingredients as long as my arm.

We would gorge on mini sausages.  Ones that contain a whole 30% meat.  We would nibble of plastic cheese, think nothing of snacking on sugar filled sweets and wash it all down with so called aspartame filled, sugar free squash.

By no means hazardous to the kids, but with massive room for improvement.

Since only eating clean, and feeling the positive health changes that have come with that, I have made significant changes to the childrens’ diet.  We are committed to the Organix No junk campaign, whilst also not sacrificing on taste.

Today we took the dog to the woods, and packed a feast to enjoy in the sun.

We ate chicken dunked in home made mayo, ate strawberries we picked in the week from the bushes.  Owen whooped when he found a bag of prunes at the bottom of the bag, I relished every bit of my home made prawn salad.

We chose Organix crisps, made with no rubbish added in.  We drank water, it has no added sugar or anything else for that matter.  Tomatoes, radishes, and raspberries gave us all the sugar we craved.  Simple cheese sandwiches (made with organic cheddar from grass fed cows) offered a delightful but effective carb and protein solution.

Hummus and carrot sticks were quickly consumed.

We didn’t get that post picnic sugar high which is always followed by a resounding crash.

Pudding was yogurt and a few more handpicked strawberries.

We ate, enjoyed, played and laughed.

A perfect, almost Paleo picnic.
